Did You Know You Can Book a Hygienist Directly? How Direct Access Works
Most people assume that to see a dental hygienist you first need an appointment with a dentist. For years that was true — but since the General Dental Council introduced 'direct access' in 2013, you can book a dental hygienist or therapist in the UK directly, without a dentist's referral, for a wide range of treatments.
Direct access covers the everyday care hygienists are experts in: professional cleaning (scale and polish), removing plaque and tartar, assessing and treating gum disease, applying fluoride, and giving tailored advice on brushing, flossing and diet to prevent decay. For many people, a hygienist is the practitioner they see most often — so being able to book one straight away removes an unnecessary step.
Dental hygienists and therapists are registered with the same regulator as dentists — the General Dental Council — and hold a GDC registration number you can verify. They are trained clinicians, not assistants, and work to the same professional standards. On BookMyDentist you'll see each hygienist's role clearly labelled as 'Dental Hygienist · GDC Registered'.
There are a couple of sensible limits. A hygienist can't diagnose or treat problems outside their scope — if they spot something that needs a dentist, they'll refer you. And some practices ask new patients to have a dentist examination before hygiene treatment, so that your overall oral health is assessed first. Where a practice requires this, we'll tell you during booking and offer you the New Patient Exam instead.
Booking is simple: search for a practice, choose a hygiene appointment type, pick a hygienist (or 'any available'), select a time and confirm. No dentist visit required first. If you've been putting off a clean because you thought you needed a full check-up to get one — you don't.
